The Kansas City Chiefs are headed back to the Super Bowl for the third consecutive year, and tight end Travis Kelce has been a vital part of their success. With 10 straight Pro Bowl selections under his belt, Kelce is undoubtedly one of the greatest tight ends in NFL history. However, some are speculating that his time in Kansas City may be drawing to a close. 
Ben Rolfe of Pro Football Network suggests that Kelce’s $19.8 million cap number for 2025 may be too steep for the Chiefs. Rolfe notes that Kelce’s production has declined slightly over the past two seasons, with his yards per reception dropping from above 12 for nine straight years to 8.5 in 2024. Additionally, Kelce’s touchdown numbers have decreased, with only eight scores over the last two seasons combined.
While Rolfe’s points are valid, it’s hard to imagine the Chiefs parting ways with Kelce. Despite being 34 years old, Kelce remains one of the top tight ends in the league, and his playoff performances have been nothing short of spectacular. The Chiefs’ offense is built around Kelce’s versatility and reliability, and it’s unlikely that they would be able to replace him with a suitable alternative.
Rolfe suggests that the Chiefs could consider releasing Kelce and then re-signing him to a more cap-friendly deal. However, this seems like a long shot, given Kelce’s importance to the team and his likely desire to finish his career in Kansas City.
In reality, the chances of the Chiefs releasing Kelce this offseason are slim to none. Kelce is a beloved leader on the team, and his contributions on and off the field are invaluable. As the Chiefs prepare for another Super Bowl run, it’s likely that Kelce will be right in the middle of it all, doing what he does best: making big plays and helping his team win.
