NFL legend Troy Aikman has weighed in on the upcoming Super Bowl LIX matchup between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles. In a recent episode of Sports Illustrated’s “SI Media With Jimmy Traina,” Aikman shared his prediction for the big game, foreseeing a defensive battle between the two teams.
Despite the Chiefs’ offense being led by superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes and tight end Travis Kelce, Aikman believes that the game will be a low-scoring affair. “Expect it to be a defensive battle,” Aikman said. “You know, Philly has obviously been really good defensively. I think Kansas City has been outstanding as well… I do not see this game being a high-scoring game.”
Aikman’s prediction is backed up by the statistics. The Eagles had one of the best defensive squads in the NFL this season, allowing just 278.4 yards per game, 174.2 passing yards per game, and 17.8 points per game. The Chiefs defense, while not as statistically impressive, has been solid, allowing just 19.2 points per game.
The key to the game, according to Aikman, will be the Eagles’ ability to play a clean game. “For Philadelphia, I think to get over the hump, they’ve got to play a really clean game,” Aikman said. This will be a tall order, as the Chiefs have a knack for finding ways to win, even when their offense is not clicking.
Aikman knows a thing or two about what it takes to win the Super Bowl. As a three-time Super Bowl champion with the Dallas Cowboys, he understands the importance of defense in the big game. Super Bowl LIX will take place on Sunday, Feb. 9, in New Orleans, Louisiana, and Aikman’s prediction of a defensive battle is sure to be put to the test.
