Tyson Bagent has a good arm, but it’s not the strongest in his family.
The Bears quarterback is the son of one of the greatest arm wrestlers of all time. Travis Bagent, known to many as “The Beast” has captured numerous world championships during his arm wrestling career. The 47-year-old began competing in the sport in the late 1990s and still participates in tournaments to this day.
Bagent may no longer be the top arm wrestler in the world, but he will still compete in tournaments and has turned what used to be a hobby into his career that supplements the income from his CrossFit gym.

Here’s what to know about Travis Bagent’s arm-wrestling career and why it has come to the forefront of the discussion as his son continues to start for the Bears.
Tyson Bagent’s dad is a champion arm wrestler
Travis Bagent has taken home numerous arm wrestling titles at the national and world levels. NFL Network reports that he has won 28 world championships over the course of his career, which has spanned more than two decades.
Bagent, a CrossFit gym owner, learned how to arm wrestle from his father, Rusty Bagent. The elder Bagent picked up the sport while serving in the Marines during the 1960s and 1970s and later opened up two West Virginia clubs — The Big Arm in Shepherdstown and Billy Jack’s in Charles Town — at which arm wrestling competitions were held.
Travis credits his time at his father’s clubs for helping him to develop into a championship-level arm wrestler, as he told KatherineCobb.com in 2016.
I had a lot of time to work at it and having all that experience before I went to the national championships gave me an edge. Few people have a situation like mine, a place where there are 10 tables and 400 to 600 competitors every Friday, Saturday and Sunday. And I cared desperately about finding someone in there I could beat! I didn’t stop until I did, and one thing I had the ability to do was beat people who were stronger than me. I don’t think most people get that.
As Bagent continued to compete in arm wrestling tournaments, his profile grew. He became a threatening force at the table and earned the nickname “The Beast” in Poland back in 2004. The CrossFit gym owner sports a 6-3, 265-pound frame, so the nickname is a sensible one.
Bagent’s arm wrestling prowess has turned what was once a hobby for him into a lucrative career. He told Cobb in 2016 that he was making $500,000 to $1 million competing in tournaments, hosting expos and refereeing them after it was previously “a $25,000 annual situation.”
That is part of what allowed him to blossom into what he believes to be one of the greatest arm wrestlers of all time.
